Septic additives (bacteria and enzymes etc.)

Let’s start with the premise that bacteria along with enzymes are the main players when it comes to processing sewage in our septic tanks. After that, the next stop is the disposal field or tile bed. Factors that need to be considered with regard to digestion in the septic tank are temperature, PH values, and organic loading of the septic tank sewage.

Bacteria from our bodies are designed to work in an environment that has a balanced PH and to break down the organic material we eat at temperatures that are relatively close to body temperatures. They are not as effective at cooler temperatures and lower PH values which can occur in the septic tank. The bacteria produced in our body is also not effective when it comes to breaking down more complex fats, greases, and oils. These fats, greases, and oils should be kept out of the septic system in an ideal world, but that is impossible in a modern household. We need to learn to reduce the products that contribute to this issue.

Organic loading of the septic tank can be reduced by not throwing more organic material than necessary in the septic system. The size of the family living in the home has a direct influence on the organic loading, but not much can be done about that except to consider the maximum loading capacity with regard to the septic system design.

Adding beneficial bacteria to your septic system is a good practice that can be likened taking a multi-vitamin every day. We take multivitamins usually because we are afraid that we may be missing something in our diet. Usually, we don’t feel any different but we do it anyway.

The only true way to assess how the septic system is that I working is to have it inspected by a professional.
